powerful metaphor to voice the space between the hearing and the non-hearing

First Crush
is an example of miscommunication. In this piece, the filmmaker interviewed
strangers with a video camera. She asked each individual about his or her first
crush. Throughout the editing process, what was a sweet, giggly story about
someone's first crush turned into a private hell of her as she agonizingly
tried to lip-read what was being said word for word.

This film
chronicles the evolution of ASL poetry from the beginnings of deaf poets
experimenting with translation of written English poems into ASL renditions
by Malz, Panara, and Bragg, to the realization that original poetry could be
created in ASL. After Stokoe's research validated ASL as a bona fide
language, pride in ASL led to works by Ella Mae Lentz, Patrick Graybill,
Clayton Valli, Debbie Rennie, and Peter Cook. Rochester, NY, and NTID played
a crucial role in the mid 80's in local deaf and hearing poets fusing into a
unified poetry community. Live performances that have never been seen in
public are included.
